2020 History Essay Contest

Deadline: Postponed to Fall 2020,
or as dictated by pandemic restrictions

Theme: “Why Hot Springs-Garland County is the Most Historical Place to Live”

Hot Springs and Garland County high school students (including home-schooled) are invited to enter an essay that may be based on a building, person, activity, event, family member or anything the student feels would meet theme criteria. Entries will be judged for clarity, style and mechanics by the Hot Springs Writers Group and historical theme by the Garland County Historical Society.

Entry Deadline: November 6, 2020

Winners and their teachers will be honored at an Awards Ceremony on November 17, 2020 at the Garland County Library during the Garland County Historical Society’s noon meeting.

1st Place: $200
2nd Place: $100
3rd Place: $50
Four Honorable Mentions: $10

Winners will have an impressive award for their college resumes!

Entry Guidelines:

  1. The essay must be original and previously unpublished.
  2. Essay is limited to 500 - 1000 words and must be titled.
  3. Essay should be double-spaced and set in Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins (right, left, top, and bottom).
  4. Include title in the header or footer but don’t include author’s name on any page.
  5. Please attach essay to email and in body of email: include name of author, title of essay, high school, grade, history teacher’s name, and author’s phone number.
